A Modified Dynamic Programming Approach for 4D Minimum Fuel and Emissions Trajectory Optimization

4D flight trajectory optimization is an essential component to improve efficiency and enhance air traffic capacity. this technique not only helps reduce the operational costs, but also environmental impact caused by airliners. This study considers Dynamic Programming (DP), a well-established numerical method ideally suited solve Trajectory Optimization Problems (TOPs). However, it bears some shortcomings that prevent use of DP in many practical real-time implementations. paper proposes Modified (MDP) approach reduces computational effort overcomes drawbacks traditional DP. In paper, two examples with fixed arrival times are presented, where proposed MDP successfully implemented generate optimal trajectories minimize aircraft fuel consumption emissions. Then obtained compared corresponding reference commercial for same route order quantify potential benefit reduction
